GALVESTON — Overcrowding at the Galveston campus housing most of the island’s middle school students is hampering education and frustrating teachers, some have complained.

Since Hurricane Ike ravaged Central Middle School on Sept. 13, Weis Middle School, 7100 Stewart Rd., has housed all of the island’s students in grades five through eight who are not enrolled in the district’s magnet school program

There are more than 1,100 students at the campus that should, ideally, have no more than 950 students, according to the district’s estimates.

“It’s bordering on criminal to have as many kids as you do at Weis,” said Ed Clack, a former school district administrator and critic of the current administration. “It’s an unsafe situation. Parents ought to be raising hell about it because it’s wrong, wrong, wrong.”
