As you saw yesterday, we went to Galveston to see our house. We already knew it was okay but we wanted to clean and get some new things. As we approached Galv we started seeing the reall mess. Everywhere around here are trees fallen down, but this was the real mess. I mean boats on the highway, complete businesses dropped to the ground, telephone poles on abandoned cars.. awful. We drove via 61st to the seawall. There ofcourse we saw or i guess didnt see, hooters, souvenir shop and the balinese room. so strange they are gone. most of the seawall has power from generators and is trying to get back to normal. most bars are open with debris on the doorstep, special menus and big fans blowing around the place. We drove to downtown and saw all the mud, dust and debris. everything that was inside a store or house is now on the street in piles. it really looks bad. the workers have masks over their mouths. Everywhere are FEMA people and red cross. So much help, its very good. The shop downstairs got completely ruined. all their stuff is outside on the curb and it smells awful.
But it was good to be back, i almost cried when we set our first step in our house. i wanted to be back so bad! We started cleaning. It didnt take us long. We also decided that Katje was going to be back the next day and we would visit him as much as possible. He really is getting tired of all the new houses. Anyways, we met up with Betsy briefly and then left.
Back at the house we recieved a phonecall from the school discrict. We need to report fri!!! Yes, this Fri! At 9am, to see eachother again, share stories and hear the plan. Then we work monday and then Tue the kids get back... well whoever is left on the island. Sooooo, we are going back to our house on Thu. Today we brought Katje. He was so happy! We have no power and the water has to be boiled for all usage. Through the grapevine we heard that we should have power by the end of the week but i am not getting my hopes up. Today we drove around the island again and saw some more horrible places. A lot of houses burned down where Thomas' parents used to live. Very very sad to see. Our old apartment complex is looking bad too. We passed by the gym and they are open. Outside is a mess and tenniscourts and pool are out of order for a while but the inside is fine. We also saw some volunteers by one of the churches, we drove passed and they gave us a lot of water and 4 boxes of food. So sweet. We also applied for FEMA aid for our evacuation expenses. They told us they can help us, so that is good news too.
So, tomorrow we are back at Galv. My cell has bad reception, so probably wont be able to talk until power is restored. I am not sure about the computer situation at work.
I'll be back with more news soon im sure.
XOXO
